Synopsis:
For years, rumors of the ‘Marsh Girl’ have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Review:
I enjoyed the story overall and the nature references and descriptions. However there were many plot holes and unbelievable coincidences/elements that I couldn’t push past. I don’t want to go into too much detail on these in case it ruins the plot or feel for anyone else.
I also found the pace a little slow than I usually enjoy (although I was expecting this as many people had mentioned!)
I really wanted to love this book, especially after it has been on my shelves for so long but I just didn’t feel the love for it the same way everyone else seems to have.
On balance I’ve rated this one a 3/5, but please do not let my review deter you from picking this one up as SO many people have absolutely loved this one!

I agree with you Delia, that although a fascinating read, the descriptions of the marsh environment are beautifully done, there are a few plot holes etc. in the narrative. The other thing that bothers me and it is alluded to near the end but not explored is that one can see that Kya learns her moral values from insects. Without I hope giving too much away, I think we as the reader are invited to collude with Kya who can be seen as behaving like a female praying mantis. Am I missing the point ?

I really enjoyed this one, but I did listen to it on Audible and I think audiobooks give a totally different experience. I think I’m more likely to analyse when I’m doing the reading myself rather than just listening 😊
