Map Monday #7

Hello and welcome to ‘Map Monday’. This was inspired by the current pandemic and lockdowns and the inability to travel. I will share one book each week with you that is set somewhere different to where I live. I’ll chat a bit about the book and throw some interesting facts out there about the place. I hope you enjoy travelling through books with me…

This week I’ve picked I Heart Hawaii by Lindsey Kelk and there are no prizes for guessing where this one is set…

Book Synopsis:

When Angela Clark’s best friend Jenny invites her to join a press trip to Hawaii, three days of sun, sea and sleep sounds like the perfect antidote to her crazed life.
 
At work in New York, she’s supposed to be the face of Having It All. But the only thing Angela feels she excels at is hiding in the printer cupboard, eating Mini Cheddars and watching Netflix on her phone and if this is living the dream, she’s more than ready to wake up.
 
A few days away with Jenny sounds like exactly what she needs but Angela’s talent for getting into a scrape guarantees nothing goes to plan – and not even the most beautiful beaches, blue skies and daiquiris will get her off the hook…

Interesting Facts about Hawaii.

• Hawaii is a US state, which grows by roughly 42 acres a year because of the Kilauea Volcano.
• It is made up of 137 different islands which contains an incredible variety of climate zones. On some of the larger islands, you can explore many of these different zones in one day.
• It is the only US state to grow Coffee commercially.
• Hawaii is home to the largest pineapple maze in the world ‘The Dole Plantation’ in Oahu – consists of 14,000 plants.
• Hawaii was the first US state to ban plastic bags
• The world famous Hawaiian macadamia nut is not actually native to Hawaii, but was first imported from Australia as decorative vegetation back in the 1880’s.
• Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that is made up entirely of islands.
• Hawaiians consume more Spam than anyone else in the US. Oahu also hosts the world’s largest Spam Festival, called Spam Jam Waikiki.
• The word ‘Hawaii’ comes from the Proto-Polynesian “hawaiki”, which means “Place of the Gods” or “Homeland”.
• Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. to honor a monarch; they celebrate King Kamehameha Day, which takes place on June 11th.
• For non-native speakers and tourists, Hawaiian names can be a challenge. The reason why might be because the Hawaiian alphabet only contains 12 letters
• All beaches are public and there are no billboards!
• While Mount Everest is the tallest mountain above sea level, Hawaii island’s Maunakea is the tallest peak when measured from its base below sea level to its summit. Maunakea, is 33,500 feet up from the ocean floor.
