Becoming – Michelle Obama

Synopsis:

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her — from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it — in her own words and on her own terms.

Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations — and whose story inspires us to do the same.

Review:

I think I’ve only read one memoir/autobiography/biography before this one. They’re not my usual go to read but I am beyond glad that I requested this one from my library on audio.

Let’s not be shy about the fact it’s HUGE. At 19 hours it’s taken me about 2 months to finish it, but it was so worth it.

I not only learnt a whole heap about the Obama administration, Michelle as a person, America in general but also about myself. As I was learning about her upbringing, resilience, fears, hopes and dreams – it allowed me to reflect on my own.

I admire the brutal honestly which she laid out for the reader. It must take a lot to bare everything and in this case it really paid off.

Listening to this on audio only enhanced my experience. Hearing Michelle’s story, told by Michelle was second to none. It’s funny, warm and very very we written!

5 huge stars from me and a big old recommendation to anyone who is even vaguely interested!
