The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald

The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when, The New York Times remarked, “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s that resonates with the power of myth. A novel of lyrical beauty yet brutal realism, of magic, romance, and mysticism, The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature.

If I’m to be completely honest, which I always am when reviewing books…I’m not really sure how I feel about this book! I know it’s a ‘literary great’ but it didn’t leave me loving it.

I found the writing style easier than I was expecting but I still didn’t get along with it without any hitches… I was often a little confused with the characters and who was talking to who. I also didn’t fully understand all the relationships, these could have done with a little more explanation.

That being said though I did enjoy the story line and getting to know Gatsby and Daisy. If anything, maybe a slightly longer story would have worked for me?
