Book beginnings on Fridays is hosted by Rose City Reader and it is a chance to share the first sentence or so of a book you’ve reading, about to read or recently read.
This week the book i’d like to share is The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. This is a book I’ve read and particularly loved so I hoped that by sharing the beginning of it, I could encourage more to read and love it too.

Ninteen years before she decided to die, Nora Seed sat in the warmth of the small library at Hazledene School in the town of Bedford. She stared at a chessboard on a low table.
“Nora dear, it’s natural to worry about your future,” said the libraran, Mrs Elm, her eyes glimmering like sunshine on frost.
Mrs Elm made her first move. A knight hopping over the near row of white pawns. “Of course, you’re going to be worried about the exams. But you could be anything you want to be, Nora. Think of all that possibility. It’s exciting”
“Yes. I suppose it is.”
“A while life in front of you”
“A while life”
Why have I not read this yet?! I ask myself what is wrong with me that I know this is going to be good and yet here I am, still not reading it!
