Map Monday #14

Hello and welcome to ‘Map Monday’. This was inspired by the current pandemic and lockdowns and the inability to travel. I will share one book each week with you that is set somewhere different to where I live. I’ll chat a bit about the book and throw some interesting facts out there about the place. I hope you enjoy travelling through books with me…

This week I’ve picked ‘And Then She Ran’ by Karen Clarke which is set in Wales, UK.

Book Synopsis:

Grace bundled her eight-week-old daughter into her carry cot, opened the door and ran.

Her life in New York faded into the background – she needed to keep her baby safe. She needed to get as far away from Patrick as possible.

Now, staying in a remote cottage in Wales, Grace is trying to start again. But she can’t shake the uneasy feeling that she’s been followed.

And then she finds a note. Left on her bed. A tiny scrap of paper with scrawl in bright red pen.

Keep her close. Anything could happen.

She’s been found. Patrick wants his baby back.

But Grace will do everything to stop him.

• Wales officially has more castles per square mile than any other country in the world.
• The village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is the second longest place name in the world.
• Snowdon (or Yr Wyddfa), is the highest peak in Wales at 1,085m (3,560 ft).
• Swallow Falls at Betws-y-coed is the most visited waterfall in the United Kingdom.
• With a population of 2,000 St David’s in Pembrokeshire is the smallest cathedral city in the world. It is also the only city in Britain that lies entirely within a national park.
• The Menai Bridge in Anglesey was the first suspension bridge in the world constructed to take heavy traffic.
• Wales has three National Parks which cover 20% of the country’s land mass and five areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
• Rugby is the national sport of Wales, and they’re pretty good at it too!
• The population of Wales is 3.1 million. However, it’s thought there are nearly 10 million sheep.
• The British royal always family uses Welsh gold for their wedding rings.
• The original ‘Jack Daniels’ originated from Wales. Joseph ‘Job’ Daniels was from Aberystwyth in West Wales.
• Only 21% of the entire Welsh population of Wales can speak Welsh!
